Tenerife and Gran Canaria are about to celebrate the fourth Aguaviva Canarias festival from June 1 to June 22. It may not be in the same league as the worldwide events which have stayed in our memories for years and raised millions of pounds but the sentiments are the same. Take an urgent cause which needs mass publicity and spread the word through music, song and a host of associated events. Aguaviva Canarias 2008 is set to do just that. Aguaviva’s motto is “united by the oceans� and it is meant to celebrate the splendours of our water world as much as stressing how easy it is to lose all the wonders. The festival aims to highlight the threat to our seas and the urgency of united action before it is too late. It’s a very serious message but it doesn’t have to be a boring or dreary lesson. Pop stars will be lending their support with Jamiraquai and King of Salsa Marc Anthony topping the bill during a series of live concerts at Playa de las Américas on different evenings from June 1 to 22. There will be submarine trips and free diving, films on the beach, sculptures made from material cleared from the seabed, a photographic exhibition and even dance classes from hip-hop to belly dancing! The programme is full and diverse and will appeal to all nationalities and ages. Fans will even be able to camp for a weekend at Los Cristianos and you will be able to watch in wonder as tiny baby turtles are released into the sea. The duration of Aguaviva takes in the Worldwide Day of the Environment on June 5 and the Worldwide Day of the Oceans on June 8. Many of the events are free but the aim is the same - to promote the discovery, respect and love of the oceans.
